bacteremia
[ noun ] transient presence of bacteria (or other microorganisms) in the blood <noun.state>
bacteremia \bac`ter*e"mi*a\ (b[a^]k*t[=e]r*[=e]"m[=e]*[.a] or b[a^]k`t[u^]*r[=e]"m[=e]*[.a]), n. The presence of bacteria in the blood.
Syn: bacteriemia. [WordNet 1.5]
All the patients in both groups developed the bacteremia, or the more dangerous bacteremic shock, as a result of some pre-existing localized infection, such as urinary tract or abdominal infection, which suddenly got loose in the bloodstream.
The severe form, known as group A streptococcus bacteremia, gets past the body's primary defenses and enters the bloodstream through injury, infection from a surgical incision, or other ways that are still unclear.
But it had no effect on patients with infections who didn't have gram-negative bacteremia, and thus overall, didn't signficantly improve chances of survival.
