On Montserrat, which has a population of 12,000, Gov. Christopher Turner said the island suffered millions of dollars of damage and that tourism would be set back by at least six months.
Their populations range from 12,000 in Montserrat to 119,000 in St. Lucia.
Among them, Messenger found Montserrat's last known Irish fiddler a few years ago. "He held the fiddle in the crook of his arm and his daughter did an Irish stepdance," the anthropologist said.
Nearly all of Montserrat's 12,000 residents were homeless and schools, hospitals and the police department all suffered serious damage, said ham radio operator Stuart Haimes of Queens, N.Y.
Ham radio operators reported at least five deaths in Montserrat, but there was no official confirmation.
A ministry spokesman would not identify the ship involved, but British news reports said the frigate HMS Alacrity was en route from the Caribbean island of Montserrat where it had been helping to clean up from Hurricane Hugo.
"Initially, we had looked at the possible long-term effects and had indicated it was going to take three years before there would be full recovery," he said. "But I think this may apply just to Montserrat.
Montserrat Gov. Christopher Turner toured the island and told reporters the damage would run into many millions of dollars.
Other confirmed deaths included nine people on the British Island of Montserrat, five on the French territory of Guadeloupe and two on Antigua.
