A pointed instrument for piercing small holes, as in leather
or wood; used by shoemakers, saddlers, cabinetmakers, etc.
The blade is differently shaped and pointed for different
uses, as in the {brad awl}, {saddler's awl}, {shoemaker's
awl}, etc.
