    A North American fish ({Clupea vernalis}) of the Herring
    family. It is called also {ellwife}, {ellwhop}, {branch
    herring}. The name is locally applied to other related
    species.

    1. The predator brought the alewife population in check, and the salmon began to grow so large that sport fishermen paid big money to catch them.
