Vote tallying began Monday for ballots cast Saturday in Assembly elections in the northeastern states of Nagaland and Mizoram, where ballot boxes from remote interior villages had to be collected by helicopter.
The hills cover 5,200 square miles of inhospitable land bordering Burma and the northeastern Indian states of Tripura and Mizoram.
State Chief Minister Laldenga has asked Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to remove Assam Rifles personnel from Mizoram for mutiny and rebellion against the government, UNI said.
Mizoram was the scene of a 20-year guerrilla war for independence until 1986, when a peace accord was signed with the Indian government.
United News of India said counting would not begin until Monday in Mizoram state, where some ballot boxes in remote villages had to be collected by helicopters.
The national government Wednesday imposed direct federal rule and dissolved the legislature in the northeastern state of Mizoram, news reports said.
