Harsh weather has caused heavy casualties in China this spring. Hailstorms killed 157 people in southwestern China's Sichuan province in April and seven in neighboring Guizhou province.
Earlier this month police in the southern province of Guizhou reported arresting 10 members of an underground group allegedly conspiring to overthrow the government.
Earlier news reports said acid rain is a major problem in Sichuan province in southwestern China and neighboring Guizhou province, in the southern provinces of Hunan and Guangxi, and in Shanghai.
On Sunday, it was reported that a local party leader in Guizhou was sentenced to death for selling bootleg liquor.
The report said the incident occurred on June 18 when a temporary worker at the provincial museum tried to stop Zou Zuen, a student from Guizhou People's University, from entering a room at the museum, saying he smelled of alcohol.
Wu Jinghua, appointed to the job in May 1985, was replaced by Hu Jintao, head of the party committee in Guizhou province since July 1985.
